Welcome to the new CARI website. Under construction as of 8/26/17 but working quickly.. please bear with us.
CARI is an incorporated not-for-profit research institute that owns and operates Iroquois Farm, the Tilden Stage Bed & Breakfast, and The Country Garden Restaurant. All three are located on riverfront land facing the St. Lawrence River between the border of New York State and Canada.
Iroquois Farm consists of 250 acres of prime farm land located on the banks of the St. Lawrence River. The 15 acre section between the River and New York State Route # 37 is the site of all the farm buildings, including the Tilden Stage Inn and B&B, The Country Garden Restaurant, the main barn, the machine barn, two shops, a garden house, a 96 foot green house and two residences.
This site is also the location of the garden while the crop land, sugar bush and woodlot are located across the Highway. There are 12 fields with about 150 acres of crop land. Nearly 40 acres of the land have drainage tile installed.
The Purpose of CARI is to research the suitability of the crop land located along the U.S.–Canada border and the 45th latitude for a variety of vegetable, herb, forage and grain crops using traditional sustainable agricultural and organic methods of production.
Our Mission Statement
“To cultivate, foster, and promote interest and participation in agriculture, the production of healthful food, good nutrition and healthy lifestyles.
To establish and conduct seminars and research projects for individuals in the agricultural industry in organic farming and “alternative agricultural methods” and act as an interpretive center for “sustainable agriculture,” good nutrition and a healthful life plan.
To provide for the delivery and holding of lectures, exhibitions, public meetings, classes and conferences calculated directly or indirectly to advance the cause of agricultural education whether general, professional or technical.”
In addition to research plots, CARI operates a commercial garden and greenhouse certified organic by NOFA New York Certified Organic, LLC. CARI also raises organic crops such as soy, wheat, corn and forage meals. The income from gardening and farming supports the programs of the Institute.
CARI’s seminars and field days are open to the public, either free or for a small charge. These educational programs provide information about organic and sustainable agriculture methods, as well as marketing opportunities and other matters of interest to farmers, gardeners and others.
